# Maps overview

> Look up taxes for one employee's home and work address pair in Maps, and see the geospatial boundaries behind each tax returned.

Maps returns the taxes that apply to a single employee, from a home and work address pair, and draws the geospatial boundaries behind each result on the map.

It is most effective for researching one employee at a time, or for seeing **why** a location resolves the way it does. For many addresses at once, use [Batch](/prp/portal/batch).

## What a lookup takes

Two addresses plus two inputs that change which taxes are required:

* **Company has nexus**, set on the home state. See [Required taxes](/prp/core-concepts/required-taxes).
* **Nonresident certificate**, set on the work state. See [Reciprocity and nonresident certificates](/prp/core-concepts/reciprocity-and-nonresident-certificates).

For the steps, see [Quickstart: Look up taxes in Portal](/prp/getting-started/portal-quickstart).

## What comes back

Required and additional taxes for both the employee and the employer, the jurisdiction identifiers behind them, and minimum wage rates for clients who license the add-on. See [Data returned from maps](/prp/portal/maps-data-returned), and [Wage Rates overview](/prp/portal/wage-rates) for the minimum wage side.

## Display settings

The map view and the boundaries drawn on it are configurable, and those settings change only what is rendered, not which taxes are returned. See [Configure maps display settings](/prp/portal/maps-settings).

<Info>
  Results are also shaped by organization-wide settings. The **Payer**, **Authority** and **Tax withholding** filters can each hide taxes that were returned. See [Global settings](/prp/portal/global-settings).
